Foz do Iguaçu is a Brazilian city in the State of Paraná. Its population, according to the 2018 IBGE estimates, was of 258,823 inhabitants. With a land area of 617,701 sq km, of which 61,200 sq km in the urban perimeter,it is 643 kilometers from the capital of the state.
According to an article published by the Exame magazine in March 2014, it is the third destination for foreign tourists in the country [10] and the first one of the South region.
Internationally known by the Iguazu Falls, one of the winners of the contest that elected the 7 Wonders of Nature [11], and by the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, the second largest of the world in size and first in power generation, which was considered, in 1996, one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The city has an annual average temperature of 20.4°C, and its vegetation is the Atlantic Forest. With a 99.00% urbanization rate, the city had 55 health establishments in 2009. Its Human Development Index (HDI) is of 0.751.
It integrates an urban area with more than 700 thousand inhabitants, also formed by Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay, and Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina, countries with which the city borders. Iguaçu is an indigenous toponym, and it can be originally broken down in Y (water), and guazú (large), and the current name occurs with the addition of a vowel. Its residents are typically named by the demonym iguaçuenses.
